Five Songs I Karaoked Last Night

This time, the headline doesn’t lie. I really karaoked last night (as opposed to several days or weeks ago), and I really sang five songs. Maybe. Shoot, Nick didn’t hold me to writing them down last night. I’m likely missing some. Frick.

Want to keep up with all the awesomeness that I karaoke? Peek at my Spotify playlist that has songs that I’ve performed since March. Want to know what’s coming up? I’ve got a Spotify reminder playlist for that, too.

*** Edit: Oh! I sang “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar, too! I knew there was another song! Am I missing anything else?

Five Songs I Karaoked Last Night

Like most things in my life right now, that title is off by a few days. Maybe a few weeks. A few months? Who knows anymore. Things have been upside-down since mid-August, and blogging, singing and everything else took a hiatus for some top-priority family issues and events.

Today, my heart is a bit heavier, but things are calming down little by little. Last Friday, I finally returned to karaoke for a bit of therapy, and it was the best medicine I could ask for. Hosting my first gig since Aug. 19, I slid back into a place that feels like a second home with friends who are as supportive as they are entertaining. I can’t go four weeks without this again.

My five six songs:

(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding,” Elvis Costello

When Love Comes to Town,” U2 (duet with Sam)

Creep,” Radiohead (duet with Amit after Chad gave up)

(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes (duet with Mitchell)

You Oughta Know,” Alanis Morissette

City of Blinding Lights,” U2 (initially a duet with Sam, but Cat and Zach soon joined in)

Side note of awesomesauce: Zach still is plugging the hell out of Songs for #Joplin and recently coordinated a barbecue and concert to raise funds for the tornado-ravaged city in Missouri. Here’s my ReviewSTL.com post about the event and about Joplin. The event has passed, but the need for support is still there. Please consider downloading Songs for #Joplin or donating if you can.

Five Bits of Awesomesauce

I’m not doing well in my goal to slow down this month, but even though I’m still exhausting myself, at least I’m using my time for neato things. Below, check out five from this week.

Five Movie Lines I Use in Conversation

Don’t you hate those people who quote The Big Lebowski or Anchorman over and over, always laughing uproariously because they think that whatever they just said is absofreakinglutely hilarious? Yeah, me too.

Luckily, I’m not one of those people. I am, however, a girl who accidentally inserts random bits of pop culture into dialogue. I’ve already told you about song lyrics I utter. Now, feast your eyes on five lines from movies that I use in conversation without realizing it until it’s too late. Honestly, I don’t mean to do it - it just happens and usually (Often? Sometimes?) fits the conversation in some way! Isn’t it strange how pop culture just soaks into your brain?

  • Laugh it up, fuzzball,The Empire Strikes Back - There are so many freaking Star Wars quotes floating around in my subconscious, but I say this one most often. Runner up: “I don’t know where you get your delusions, laser brain.”
  • Information that could have been brought to my attention YESTERDAY!The Wedding Singer - I use this one a lot. Like, a lot-lot. I really should stop muttering this at work so often. And now that I’m hosting karaoke, I’m going to have to be careful not to yell, “I have a microphone and you don’t, SO YOU WILL LISTEN TO EVERY DAMN WORD I HAVE TO SAY.”
  • I carried a watermelon. *pause* I carried a watermelon?Dirty Dancing - Anytime I need to say “carry” or “watermelon,” this line comes out, even if I’m not actually carrying said watermelon. Maybe I should try carrying a watermelon to get it out of my system?
  • “Oh, Willard!” Footloose - This is totally random, as I have no friends named Willard. But when something slightly unfortunate happens to a friend (someone drops her purse, etc.), Sarah Jessica Parker’s words come flying from my mouth. (I can’t find a clip for this. If anyone else can, I’d be grateful!)
  • It’s like I’ve just given birth to my own baby girl, except she’s, like, a big, giant girl who smokes and says ‘shit’ a lot,Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion - I say random variations of this line, but the essence remains true. When I finish a giant project at work or give someone a makeover (yes, it happens), this is what I babble. My head is wack, yo. (Quote is starts at 12:00 of the linked clip.)

Five Songs I Karaoked Last Night

What: Karaoke Friday

Theme: #ILovethe90s

Reason: I still was in a 90s mood from my last post, so I declared it the night’s theme and folks kind of took to it.

Side note of awesomesauce: I love hosting karaoke. Like, lovelovelove it. You never know when random weird guys will insert your name into “Piano Man” or when your friends who swore they wouldn’t sing ask to do something by/called “Rehab” (and then don’t complain too much when you give them the wrong song). And having so many friends come and support what I do is so very touching. I could do this every freaking night.
